IBM has reported a first-quarter income from continuing operations of $1.6 billion (€1.3 billion) compared with $1.4 billion a year ago, an increase of 16 per cent.

Revenues from continuing operations for the first quarter were $22.2 billion, up 11 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2003 revenues of $20.1 billion. The group employs around 5,000 in Ireland.

"Despite the strengthening economic recovery, many of our competitors continue to struggle with the fundamental, changing dynamics of the IT industry," said IBM's chairman and chief executive Mr Samuel Palmisano.
