The dumping of waste in the midlands has seldom been out of the headlines recently, with disagreement on how the four counties and Tipperary North Riding should deal with the issue.
However, there was a report of dumping of a different kind this week when Kenagh, the north Longford village, found itself dumped on from on high.
According to a report in the Longford Leader, Pascal Chapman of Knockavegan, Kenagh, was awakened by a loud bang at 6.30 a.m. When he went outside to investigate, he discovered a large lump of ice blocking his driveway. It was the size of a big television, according to the report.
As it was not a particularly cold morning and there appeared to be no reason why the ice should be in his garden, he contacted the local newspaper in the hope it would investigate the incident. Met Eireann was unable to throw much light on the subject but did rule out the ice arriving as a result of a freak storm.
The only logical explanation, said Met Eireann, was that the ice was frozen aircraft waste which had fallen from a passing aircraft on to the Kenagh driveway.
