Eight Iceland supermarket outlets here have withdrawn two products after a programme on ITV alleged there were unhygienic practices at the premises of a British supplier. The products which have been withdrawn are chicken nuggets and onion bhajis.
The allegations were made in ITV's television programme Tonight with Trevor McDonald which claimed that a secret film made at a Perkins Frozen Foods plant in Stoke-on-Trent, England, showed unhygienic practices.
Yesterday, Mr David Sawday, head of public relations at the Big Food Group in Britain, of which Iceland is a major part, said the company was carrying out its own investigations into the allegations. "Clearly if the allegations are true, we don't want to stock these items so we have withdrawn them from the shelves," he said. Other replacement products were in the stores.
