Meath man (23) dies on holiday in SpainA 23-year-old Co Meath man has died on holiday in Spain of a suspected heart attack.
Cian Dempsey, Kiltale, Dunsany, who was a nephew of Minister for Communications Noel Dempsey, was found dead by his girlfriend on a post-Christmas trip to Barcelona. He was discovered on Friday, having seemingly suffered a massive heart attack overnight. He is survived by his parents, Sean and Cliodhna, as well as a brother and a sister.
His body may not be flown home for several days because of administrative delays in Spain. A postmortem is also due to be carried out before the body is released.
Search for man after Belfast assault
Detectives are searching for a man who tied up and assaulted a woman in Belfast in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police are investigating a possible sexual motive for the attack.
The 31-year-old was in a pub with friends when she was befriended by a man. Around 1am he took her to an outside area somewhere off Carlisle Circus where she was bound and assaulted. It is thought she was attacked at either the Lower Crumlin Road, Antrim Road, Clifton Street or North Queen Street areas. She was later treated in hospital for severe bruising. - (PA)
€100,000 grant for Glencree centre
Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern has announced a grant of €100,000 to the Glencree Centre for Reconciliation in Co Wicklow to support its work in trying to advance the cause of peace in the Middle East. The Glencree centre is working with Israeli and Palestinian political representatives to promote dialogue, drawing on the experience of the Northern Ireland peace process.
The grant comes as the former chairman of the centre, Colin Murphy, was honoured in the British New Year honours list. He was honoured with an MBE.
