Murder inquiry after body found

Police in Northern Ireland last night began a murder investigation following the discovery of a woman's body in a car park in Ballymena, Co Antrim.

The victim was named as Shirley Finlay (24) from Crebilly Road in the town.

Her body was found in a car park off Mount Street on Tuesday afternoon.

A postmortem examination was carried out yesterday and following the result the murder investigation was formally launched. The body was discovered wrapped in carpet.

Police last night appealed to the public to help them trace the last movements of the dead woman.

They also ask anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in Mount Street before 3.20pm on Tuesday to contact detectives in Ballymena.

Teenager charged over Dublin riot

A teenager has been charged with rioting, looting and indecent exposure during the violence at the Orange Order's Love Ulster rally in Dublin last February 25th.

The 17-year-old boy appeared before Dublin Children's Court yesterday on two charges of violent disorder at O'Connell Street and O'Connell Bridge. He also faces one charge for burglary of the Schuh shop and a fourth for exposing himself at O'Connell Street.

Garda Brian Amerlynck said it was alleged the north Dublin teenager threw steel barriers at a Garda public order unit on O'Connell Bridge.

"It's alleged he threw missiles, 16 in total and mostly glass bottles, at gardaí."

Judge Patrick Brady refused jurisdiction to hear the case in the Children's Court and held it should be dealt with in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The teenager was remanded on continuing bail.

71 jobs go in Cork as US firm closes

Cork city suffered a jobs blow yesterday with the announcement by an American company that it was to close its factory there by the end of December with the loss of 71 jobs, writes Barry Roche.

Data Device Corporation Ireland came to Cork in 1991 and manufactures components for the aerospace industry.

President of DDC Corporation Clifford Lane said in a statement that the decision to close the Cork plant resulted from advances in technology and a decrease in demand for its hybrid products.

No foul play in man's death

Gardaí investigating the death of a man whose remains were found in Kildare on Tuesday evening have ruled out foul play. The remains of the man, who is believed to be a foreign national, were found at waste ground at Lakelands Estate, Naas, at around 7pm.

The scene was preserved by gardaí for a technical examination. However, following a postmortem by the State Pathologist, Prof Marie Cassidy, foul play was ruled out.

Gang ties up woman and son

A gang of five men burgled a farmhouse after tying up a 76-year-old woman and her 43-year-old son at Brown's Hill, outside Carlow town, on Tuesday evening.

Neither was injured but the gang escaped with cash and a small safe.
