Plan to build houses in Sneem refused
A housing development in the picture-postcard village of Sneem in Co Kerry has been turned down by An Bord Pleanála because the village has no proper public sewerage facilities, writes Anne Lucey.
The board ruled the development would be "prejudicial to public health". Appeals to the board noted that sewage from the village was being discharged "raw" into the Sneem River.
Kerry County Council had granted permission for 42 houses with treatment plant and facilities at the entrance to Drimnabeg, the prize-winning village at Sneem Pier and foreshore.
The decision was appealed citing pressure on the village already by holiday home development.
Some 250 units were planned for the village, which has a resident population of only 300.
The developers had planned to create their own on-site treatment plant with discharge via an adjoining surface water sewer. Discharge and foreshore licences had been sought.
An Bord Pleanála turned down its inspector's recommendation of the development.
Fall from balcony was accidental
A postmortem was being carried out yesterday evening on the body of a man found underneath the balcony of his room in the grounds of the Killarney Great Southern Hotel on Sunday morning.
The man has been named as Brian Daniels (42), Clarke Street, Cork Road, Waterford. Gardaí described his death as "an unfortunate accident" and said they were satisfied there was nothing suspicious surrounding it.
Mr Daniels's body was discovered by a member of the hotel staff at 11.40am on Sunday.
He had apparently fallen off an upper balcony.
