Iran protests over prophet cartoons

TEHRAN - Iran's foreign ministry summoned the Danish ambassador yesterday to protest against newspaper cartoons of the prophet Muhammad that have angered Muslims.

The drawings, seeming to portray the prophet as a terrorist, were published in September, but a confrontation broke out this month after diplomatic efforts to solve the issue failed.

One drawing showed Muhammad wearing a turban shaped as a bomb.

"Iran's foreign ministry delivered a strong protest over the publication of the caricature that insulted the religious sentiments of Muslims," television reported.

It added that Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki had demanded an apology from the Danish government and the newspaper.

Denmark's Jyllands-Posten newspaper, which published the cartoons, apologised to Arab countries in a statement on Monday. Iran is not an Arab country.

Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen welcomed the paper's apology but did not apologise himself, in a move seen to as demonstrating press freedom from government interference.
