Priest stands aside over abuse claim
A priest of Ardagh and Clonmacnois diocese has stood aside while an allegation of child sex abuse made against him is investigated, writes Patsy McGarry. People in the relevant Co Longford parish were told at Masses over the weekend by a senior priest of the diocese.
In a message on the diocese's website, Bishop Colm O'Reilly, who is on pilgrimage in Lourdes, wrote: "I wish to inform you that, in accordance with diocesan child protection procedure, a priest of the diocese has voluntarily agreed to take administrative leave whilst an investigation takes place concerning a complaint of sexual misconduct."
He continued that "what is being investigated is an allegation which has not been established as true or false . . . The agreement of the priest to stand aside does not connote guilt on his part. The complaint relates to events alleged to have happened a considerable time ago."
