Operation to raise sunken lobster boat

A Co Wexford salvage company has begun raising the 8 metre (26-ft) lobster boat Rising Sun from the sea- bed off the Saltee islands.

Tuskar Rock Marine has hired the Irish Lights vessel Granuaile to lift the lobster boat, which has been lying in 52 metres of water since it sank on November 29th last with the loss of three lives.

The salvage is being undertaken for the Irish Coast Guard to check if the body of Pat Colfer, the missing skipper, is on board.

Hunt for attackers of girl and woman

Gardaí said yesterday that they wanted to question two men in their 30s following an attack on a 14-year-old girl and her 24-year-old woman friend in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, at about 4am on Saturday.

Gardaí said they were satisfied from initial inquiries that the teenager was subjected to a sexual assault and that her friend suffered bruising to her face. The pair were dragged into an alleyway as they walked along Lower Main Street.

€200,000 study award for doctors

Two Irish doctors are to share a €200,000 fellowship which will enable them to spend two years at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York, one of the world's leading cancer centres. The oncology fellowships were awarded to Dr Austin Duffy and Dr David Gallagher by the Irish Society of Medical Oncology and the Irish Association for Nurses in Oncology.

Nurse specialist bursaries were awarded to Janice Richmond and Ursula Courtney to enable them to attend the New York hospital for a week's clinical observation.

Few sex offenders taking programme

Only eight of the 253 sex offenders in prison were undergoing treatment and counselling, Labour Party justice spokesman Joe Costello said yesterday.

He described this as particularly serious in the case of paedophiles, who were returning to their communities "with the same predatory instincts and intentions as when they entered prison".

The information came in a reply to a parliamentary question submitted to Minister for Justice Michael McDowell, who said that the low take-up of the sex offenders' programme was a "matter of concern".

Appeal over missing baby

The PSNI has issued an appeal for information on the whereabouts of a one- year-old boy missing from a residential home at Irish Street in Derry. It is understood that the boy was taken by his mother during a scheduled visit at about 10.50am on Friday.

Officers believe that the mother and child may be in the Republic, possibly in the Cork area. The woman is described as being 168cm (5ft 5in) tall, of heavy build with tied-back auburn hair.

Anyone who knows of their whereabouts is asked to contact the police at Strand Road, Derry, on 048-906 50222.

New SVP offices opened by Ahern

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern opened SVP (St Vincent de Paul) House, the society's regional headquarters for the Dublin area, at Seán McDermott Street in the city centre at the weekend, writes Patsy McGarry. The five-storey custom-built premises contains offices, conference facilities and retail and warehouse space.
