Man swept out to sea near Dingle
A search is under way for a man who was swept out to sea from rocks near Brandon Creek in west Kerry.
The man, who is believed to be Polish, was walking yesterday with a friend on 100ft cliffs at An Cuas area, east of Brandon Creek and north of the Dingle peninsula. It is understood he had climbed on to rocks underneath the cliff to be photographed by his friend when a wave swept him away.
Rescue services were alerted at 2.30pm and the Valentia Coastguard co-ordinated the search involving the Shannon Rescue helicopter, the Fenit lifeboat and the Dingle Coast Guard unit.
Home of burn children attacked
The mother of two Limerick children who suffered serious burns in an arson attack last month was forced to flee her home yesterday morning after her house and car were attacked by vandals.
Sheila Murray (35) and six of her children fled after her home at Pineview Gardens, Moyross, came under attack. It is understood that bricks were thrown at the front door of the house, a downstairs window was broken and the windscreen of a rented car was smashed at about 1.30am yesterday.
Gardaí investigating the incident removed the car yesterday to Mayorstone Garda station for technical examination.
Last month, two of Ms Murray's youngest children were the victims of an arson attack as they sat in another car. Millie (6) her brother Gavin (4) are still receiving treatment for serious burns at Crumlin Children's Hospital in Dublin. Both have undergone skin graft operations and are likely to remain in hospital for many more months.
Two 17-year-old youths have been questioned in connection with the arson attack.
Two held on bank robbery charges
Two men have been remanded in custody on charges of attempted robbery at the Bank of Ireland, Loughrea, Co Galway, on Friday.
They were Desmond Murphy (35), River Valley Grove, Swords, Co Dublin, and Darren Maples (37), Macroom Road, Coolock, Dublin.
At a special sitting of Galway District Court on Saturday, Det Garda Kieran McNamara said Mr Murphy had been in possession of an imitation firearm. When Judge Geoffrey Browne was told by Supt Enda Walsh that Mr Murphy was apprehended on the bank premises, he said he would refuse bail.
Defending solicitor Gearóid Geraghty said his client was facing allegations and he was seeking bail for both men. Judge Browne adjourned the application for bail to Loughrea District Court on Wednesday and remanded both men in custody to Castlerea jail.
Man in court over 2003 gang murder
A man has appeared at a special court sitting in Limerick charged with withholding information about a gangland murder in the city three years ago.
Andrew Nolan (26), John Carew Park, Limerick, was charged before Judge Tom O'Donnell at Limerick District Court with withholding information about the murder of Michael Campbell-McNamara near Southill in October 2003.
He was shot in the head with his hands and feet bound and it is believed he may have been tortured.
Judge O'Donnell remanded him in custody to tomorrow.
Four die in weekend road crashes
A motor-cyclist was killed last night when his machine collided with a car on the main N2 Dublin-Derry Road near Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.
The crash happened on a stretch of the town bypass, a short distance from the Nuremore Hotel. Gardaí said two other vehicles were involved but no one else was seriously injured.
In the North, two men died over the weekend following car crashes and in Donegal, a woman died after a collision.
Mary Patricia O'Donnell, (27) a supermarket worker, was pronounced dead at Letterkenny General Hospital at noon on Saturday. She had been on a life-support machine since Friday evening when she was admitted after a head- on collision with a car on the road linking Fintown and Letterkenny, Co Donegal.
In Co Down on Friday, Bertie Hill (81), Newcastle, died after being hit by a lorry in Seaforde at about 8.30pm. It is thought he was getting out of his car when the incident happened.
A man who was injured in a collision in Co Antrim on Thursday, in which two other people were killed, died on Friday. The three all died following the crash on the Ballybogy Road near Portrush. The latest victim, who has not been named, was driving a BMW car which was involved in a head-on collision with a Renault Clio. The funerals of Jason Worthington (36) and Lynda Hunter (34), who were travelling in the Clio, took place at the weekend.
Lithuanians' homes attacked
The homes of Lithuanians were targeted in racist attacks in the North yesterday. Windows were smashed and fireworks thrown at the three houses in Drumard Drive, Lisburn, at 1am.
In Belfast, one man has been arrested after two Asian men were assaulted in Dundonald on the outskirts of the city on Friday. The men suffered minor injuries.
Arson attack on Derry DIY store
The PSNI has said it will follow "all avenues of inquiry" into an arson attack at a DIY store in Co Derry. The incendiary device exploded at B&Q in Coleraine on Saturday night, causing severe damage to the carpet section.
