Jail sentence for sex assault and robbery
Noel Cahill (28), of Captain's Road, Crumlin, pleaded guilty to robbery at Kimmage Road on November 20th, 2004, attempted robbery at St Peter's Road on February 12th, 2005, and sexual assault and robbery on South Circular Road on April 16th, 2005.
Judge Katherine Delahunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court imposed sentences totalling five years and three months, suspended 18 months of the terms and placed Cahill on the register of sex offenders.
Sentence delayed in bomb case
A man armed with two petrol bombs who tried to damage a Royal Navy helicopter on board a British warship visiting Cork last February has had sentencing in his case adjourned to next Monday.
Terence O'Brien (36), of John's Square, Blackpool, Cork, was before Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday about an incident on February 12th, 2005, at John Horgan Quay in the city where the HMS Richmond was berthed for a courtesy visit to coincide with the European Capital of Culture celebrations.
Judge Patrick J Moran adjourned sentencing in the case until next Monday to allow him to give the matter further consideration.
Five men to face extortion charges
Five Lithuanian nationals who appeared at a sitting of the District Court in Ballybay, Co Monaghan, are to face trial at the Circuit Criminal Court in Monaghan on June 13th, on charges arising out of an alleged extortion racket in which the victims were fellow nationals in different parts of the country.
The five, who were remanded on bail from an earlier sitting of the District Court, face charges of allegedly demanding money with menaces.
The accused are : Gintaras Zeluis, Celbridge, Co Kildare; Tauvtydas Kruckas, and Arvydas Bartkevicious, both from Celbridge; Laimonas Skladaitis, Clonliffe Road, Dublin; and Eivydas Zukas, Hunters Wood, Ballycullen, Dublin.
Woman in fear of her life, court told
A garda in a witness intimidation trial has told a jury that a call he got from the 62-year-old alleged victim was so severe that he immediately arranged a witness protection programme for her. Sgt Des McTiernan said the woman was "in fear of her life and very agitated".
Daniel Gaynor (20) of Berryfield Drive, Finglas, has denied at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court that he intimidated her on January 25th, 2001. The trial continues before Judge Desmond Hogan.
