Building sites to be picketed

Pickets are to be placed on a number of building sites operated by the firm Collen Construction this morning.

Three men - Andrew Clarke, Keith Kelly and William McClurg - contend that not enough jobs on a Collen site in Ballybrack in Co Dublin have been given to local people. The three were jailed last week for failing to obey a court order in relation to a picket they had set up at the Collen site in Ballybrack.

Richard Boyd Barrett urged a crowd of 200 at a rally outside the Central Bank in Dublin to "bring the dispute to Collen" with this morning's pickets. He said trade unions were meeting Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council officials, who had hired Collen Construction on the Ballybrack project, in an attempt to force a resolution of the issue.

The pickets, due to get under way today, are at Collen sites at the Municipal Gallery in the city centre, Ballybrack and UCD. A spokesman for the company said the dispute was not of their making. "A lot of local labour had been employed on the site at Ballybrack already . . . it was not Collen but a subcontractor which was hiring people."

Armed robber's amazing grace

A priest held up by a robber at gun point on a bus in Brazil said yesterday that the armed raider asked him to pray for him, writes Sorcha Crowley.

Sligo diocesan priest Fr Martin Keaveney, from Easkey, was on an 18-hour bus journey on Monday from a religious conference in the Amazon basin when two armed men jumped in front of the bus, forcing it to pull over.

Fr Keaveney told Ocean FM: "I was at the very front seat and when [ the robber] came to me I handed over my wallet. The lady beside him said I was a priest and a stranger to the country. I gave him my money and when he heard this, he returned my identity documents to me," he said.

"The other [ robber] said to me "Are you a priest?" and I said 'Yes', and he said, "Father please pray for me when you go to your church, I need them."

The defendant cannot be named for legal reasons.

Judge Gemma Loughran said among the images were ones showing the rape of children and babies.
