Dr Martin not expecting nomination
As speculation intensified last night that Pope Benedict XVI may appoint the Archbishop of Dublin as a cardinal, Dr Diarmuid Martin said he would be surprised if he was named as one of the new appointments.
Last night, Dr Martin said he would be "very surprised" if he was named as one of the new cardinals by Pope Benedict, in the event of an announcement being made today.
In recent weeks, there has been much speculation that Pope Benedict could call his first consistory during his weekly general audience in St Peter's Square today.
Murderer is recaptured
A convicted murderer, who escaped from custody while on a compassionate visit to his father in Larne, Co Antrim, was recaptured by the PSNI yesterday.
Stephen Jeffrey Wilson (38), who escaped from two prison warders and a probation officer on Monday, was apprehended when spotted outside Larne.
He is serving a life sentence for the murder of Brendan Kevin Kelly in Brighton in 1987.
Murder inquiry suspect freed
One of three men arrested on Monday in connection with the murder of Co Down woman Lisa Dorrian was released without charge yesterday. The police are still holding the other two.
