Man jailed for sex assault on nun

A man who sexually assaulted an 82-year-old nun suffering from Alzheimer's disease at a Dublin convalescent home has been jailed for two years by Judge Katherine Delahunt.

Denis Cummins (61), from Griffith Parade, Finglas East, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to sexually assaulting the now deceased nun on February 17th, 2005.

Judge Delahunt said the victim was very vulnerable and this offence would raise concerns for such institutions as to how this could have happened.

She accepted that Cummins had co-operated with gardaí and had apologised to the family.

She placed Cummins on the sex offenders' register and ordered two years' post-release supervision.

Garda Paul Darley told Mary Rose Gearty, prosecuting, that when Cummins was challenged by a nun who witnessed the assault he told her he had only given the woman a kiss and some chocolate, and implied that he had not done anything inappropriate.

He later admitted what he had done. He had no previous convictions, and had not come to Garda attention since.

Garda Darley said the victim had been living in the convalescent home for 10 years, and after the assault staff and visitors noticed she was withdrawn, sad and distant.
