Zagreb court orders arrest of politician

ZAGREB - A Croatian court has ordered the arrest of an influential parliament deputy suspected of atrocities against Serb civilians during Croatia's 1991-95 independence war, state news agency Hina said yesterday.

The Zagreb county court ordered the detention of Branimir Glavas, who is under investigation for abduction, torture and murder of Serbs in the eastern city of Osijek in late 1991 and early 1992, when he was in charge of the city's defence. - (Reuters)

Howard quizzed over honours

LONDON - British police questioned Michael Howard, former leader of the opposition Conservatives, about a cash-for-honours scandal yesterday, Mr Howard said.

The police decision to interview Mr Howard, who led the Conservatives into the last general election in May last year, made it more likely they would talk to the prime minister, Tony Blair, political commentators said. - (Reuters)

Travel writer Eric Newby dies

LONDON - Travel writer Eric Newby (86), author of A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, has died, his family said.

Mr Newby, who spent 40 years writing of his travels, died of "natural causes", his daughter, Sonia Ashmore, said yesterday.

She said: "He had been unwell over the last year and he passed away peacefully on Friday evening. It was not unexpected.

"He was extraordinarily resistant and a physically strong man." - (PA)

More remains found in New York

NEW YORK - More bones believed to belong to victims of the September 11th, 2001, World Trade Center attack were found as New York continued searching underground areas that were apparently overlooked during the excavation years ago.

Deputy mayor Ed Skyler, overseeing the recovery effort, said yesterday that searchers had identified additional manholes and utility cavities that needed to be examined.

The medical examiner's office said there were 18 finds yesterday and the total cache of discoveries ranged from tiny fragments to recognisable bones from skulls, torsos, feet and hands. - (AP)
