Prosecution ends case in Chawke trial
The case for the prosecution has concluded in the trial of a man accused of shooting publican Charlie Chawke during an armed robbery at his Dublin premises in 2003.
It was day three of the trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court of Larry Cummins (54), Mellowes Road, Finglas, who pleaded not guilty to intentionally causing serious harm to Mr Chawke, robbery of €48,652 in cash and cheques and having a shotgun at the Goat Grill, Goatstown.
The trial continues before Judge Frank O'Donnell today.
Man on brothel, bullets charges
A man has appeared in court charged with assisting in brothel-keeping and with having machine-gun bullets.
David Cowley (41), with an address at Loughlinstown shopping centre, Dublin, was charged with helping to run a brothel at two Bachelors Walk apartments on December 9th last.
He was also charged with having 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition on December 10th.
Judge Mary Collins refused to allow the case to be dealt with at district court level after hearing it was alleged he collected money at the brothel after it was delivered by a woman known to be a prostitute.
Garda Janice Byrne said it was also alleged that in a follow-up search of a house where he had previously lived, gardaí found live ammunition, "suitable for use in a machine gun".
There was no objection to bail providing he signed on at his local Garda station, the garda added.
Judge Collins set bail at €500 with an independent surety of €500 and remanded him to appear again in September.
English police appeal after rapes
Police in England are looking for a group of boys believed to belong to the Traveller community, in connection with the rape and sexual assault of three teenage girls last year.
Det Insp Mark Backhouse said he was appealing for Irish people to help them solve the crime.
He said the incident had happened in the village of Appleby in Cumbria where there is an annual horse fair.
"We know that two 13- and a 14-year-old girl were attacked by a group of five boys," Det Insp Backhouse said.
"All of the girls were raped and subjected to serious sexual assaults.
"We also know that the boys are or said they were from Ireland. They had Irish accents. We believe for various reasons that they're from the Travelling or gypsy community and we have very good descriptions."
Footage of the attacks was shown on Wednesday night on the BBC's Crimewatch.
