Man questioned over child porn images

Gardaí in Drogheda have confirmed that a man in his 40s has been interviewed by them in connection with the possession of child pornographic images.

It is understood that the images were downloaded from the internet and that credit card records led to him being identified.

Earlier this week the man, believed to be married and to have a number of children, called to Drogheda Garda station to speak to investigating officers from both Drogheda Garda station and from the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

A file will be sent to the DPP.

Limerick brothers receive jail terms

A 24-year-old Limerick man has been jailed for 10 years by Judge Carroll Moran for his part in a shooting outside a christening party, writes Kathryn Hayes.

Damien Quinn, Ballygrennan Close, Moyross, Limerick, was convicted by a jury at Limerick Circuit Court last month of having a shotgun in his possession with intent to endanger life at Sarsfield Gardens, Moyross on May 1st, 2005.

Mr Quinn was also found guilty of two further charges of having the weapon in suspicious circumstances and to assaulting 35-year-old Thomas Leamy, causing him harm on the same date.

The court heard that Mr Leamy was shot twice in the back outside a house where his baby niece's christening party was taking place.

It was the prosecution's case that Mr Quinn had encouraged his younger brother Matthew to shoot Mr Leamy.

Matthew Quinn (22), also of Ballygrennan Close, Moyross, Limerick, was jailed for six years after he pleaded guilty to two separate charges arising from the same incident.

Dutchman warned he could go to jail

A man who has been warned that he will be jailed if he doesn't stop downloading child pornography has had sentencing in his case adjourned until next Wednesday.

Francis Daams, a Dutchman with an address at School Road, Durrus, West Cork, who is the sole carer of his wheelchair bound wife, was arrested as part of Operation Amethyst on May 27th, 2002.

An analysis and examination of the hard drives of two of his computers yielded 11,534 images of child porn.

Driving instructor fined €1,300

A driving instructor was fined €1,300 yesterday after he crashed into another car while on his way to pick up his next client.

Gamini Perera (40), Glendale Estate, Leixlip, Co Kildare, denied careless driving outside a shopping centre in Leixlip on October 6th last.

Dublin District Court heard the collision occurred when Mr Perera came out from a side road on to a main road. He claimed both roads were of equal status but Judge John Coughlan found they were not and imposed a fine of €1,300 .

Youth remanded in custody

A 17-year-old youth appeared in the Dublin Children's Court yesterday charged with assault causing harm to a man who allegedly had half an ear bitten off at Aldborough Road, Dublin, on June 20th. Judge Bryan Smyth remanded him in custody on consent to bail with an independent surety of €1,000.

Three charged with terror offences

Three people, including a husband and wife, appeared in a Belfast court yesterday charged with terrorist offences following a police operation earlier this week against suspected dissident republicans.

The three were among 10 people detained on Monday after some 200 police officers carried out raids in Armagh and Fermanagh.

Desmond Kearns (41), Co Armagh, was charged with conspiracy to possess a quantity of weapons including AK47 assault rifles, sniper rifles, heavy machine guns and pistols.

His wife Alison (37) and Michael Gregory (37) were charged with other terrorism offences. They were remanded in custody until July 28th.

Six others arrested on Monday have been released. One is being questioned by police. - (Reuters)

Travellers protest over eviction

The plight of a Traveller and her baby son evicted from a camp in north Cork was highlighted yesterday by more than 50 protesters outside the Dáil.

The woman and her seven-month-old son have been left with nowhere to go since being moved from the council-owned land on St Bernard's Road, Fermoy.

The woman, in her early 20s, was arrested yesterday under a public order offence and her caravan was impounded under instructions from Fermoy Town Council.

She was later released without charge. The incident has outraged members of the Travelling community nationwide.

Supporters say the mother, who recently separated from her husband and is on the local housing list, has nowhere to go.

Damien Peelo of the Irish Travellers Movement said mystery still surrounded why the woman was arrested and what would happen to her next.

Rose Carroll of Fermoy Town Council confirmed the arrest was made by gardaí following discussions with the local authority.

Gardaí said more investigations are to be carried out.

Steam train heads for Wexford

The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland and Iarnród Éireann are running a steam train to Wexford on Sunday, July 2nd. The train departs Connolly station, Dublin, at 10.40am and returns at 8.45pm.

Tickets costing €32 and €22 are on sale at the Iarnród Éireann Travel Centre, Lower Abbey Street; Pearse station, Westland Row; and from Educational Building Society branches in Malahide, Dún Laoghaire, and Drumcondra Road and at the station on the day. For details call 01-280 9147.

Revamp for GAA founder's cottage

The president of the GAA Nicky Brennan yesterday turned the first sod in a €1 million restoration of the 150- year-old cottage lived in by GAA founder Michael Cusack in the Burren village of Carron, Co Clare.

Mr Brennan praised the energy and enthusiasm of local GAA members.
