Two charged with Dublin man's murder

Two brothers charged with the murder of Christy Cawley in Inchicore, Dublin last Sunday appeared before Dublin District Court yesterday. Warren Dumbrell (32) and Jeffrey Dumbrell (26), of Emmet Road, Inchicore were remanded in custody to appear in court next Wednesday.

Christy Cawley (33), a married father of six from Tyrone Place, Inchicore, was found stabbed and beaten in the flats complex where he lived, on Vincent Street West in the Dublin suburb.

Mr Cawley was found by gardaí in a stairwell after they received a call at about 7.45pm on Sunday. He was taken to St James's Hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Killer pleads guilty to vice charge

Charlotte Mulhall (23), who was convicted last Saturday of murdering her mother's boyfriend, was yesterday fined €200 for failing to turn up in court on a charge of prostitution.

She pleaded guilty in Dublin District Court to soliciting for the purposes of prostitution, contrary to Section 7 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 1993. The offence is alleged to have occurred last September when she was on bail for the murder of Farah Swaleh Noor (38) whose dismembered and headless body was thrown into the Royal Canal.

Ms Mulhall, a mother of one, is to be sentenced for the murder on December 4th along with her older sister Linda (31) who was convicted of the manslaughter of Mr Noor.

Judge Cormac Dunne yesterday imposed a €200 fine on the failure to appear charge and took the prostitution charge into account.

Rapist fails to stop extradition

A Nigerian man arrested in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, earlier this year has lost his High Court bid to stop his extradition to Germany to serve a sentence for the rape of a woman carried out by him and another person after the woman was drugged.

Mr Justice John MacMenamim yesterday ordered the extradition of Anthony Abinbola who was arrested by gardaí in Letterkenny on July 19th last. Abinbola has 15 days to appeal the order.

Bail for two men on IRA charges

Two Co Carlow men charged with IRA membership had their bail terms set by the Special Criminal Court yesterday.

Mark Doran (26), of Poachers Lock, Leighlinbridge, was charged on Saturday with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the IRA on October 26th. He was remanded on bail until November 28th.

The court also fixed bail terms for Patrick Dermody (20), New Road, Leighlinbridge, who is charged with membership of an unlawful organisation and possession of a double barrelled shotgun.

Hume Street hospital offered €30m

The trustees of Hume Street hospital, off St Stephen's Green, Dublin, are believed to have been offered over €30 million for the Georgian buildings which housed the skin and cancer hospital since 1911, writes Jack Fagan.

Patients were recently transferred to St Vincent's hospital at Elm Park.

About six developers tendered for the five interconnecting houses which are listed for preservation.

Extension for bombings report

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has granted another extension of the timeframe for the completion of the report by the Commission of Investigation into the Dublin and Monaghan bombings of 1974, writes Stephen Collins, Political Correspondent.

In response to a request from Patrick MacEntee, SC, the sole member of the Commission, the Taoiseach agreed to a request for a further extension to December 11th next.

Aer Arann flight in emergency landing

An Aer Arann flight with 33 passengers and four crew on board was forced to make an emergency landing at Shannon airport yesterday afternoon after a fire broke out in one of the plane's engines.

Aer Arann flight 254, an ATR72 twin prop aircraft, was travelling from Farranfore airport, Kerry, to Dublin but touched down safely at 3.10pm.

Senior citizens seek an increase

The Irish Senior Citizens Parliament is calling for the State pension to be increased to 40 per cent of average industrial earnings. In its pre-budget submission it calls for the state pension to be increased by €21 in each of the next two years to €235.
