Four held after shooting in Limerick

A man in his early 20s is recovering in hospital following a shooting in Limerick city yesterday.

Four men have been arrested and were being held for questioning last night at Mayorstone and Henry Street Garda stations.

The victim was shot at 10.30am in Creaval Park, Moyross.

The attack, believed to be connected to a feud, follows a number of shootings in the large council housing estate in recent months.

The injured man was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, where his injuries were described as "non life-threatening".

The shooting happened just two days after gardaí were shot at in a separate incident in the St Mary's Park area of Limerick.

Man arrested in €1m cannabis haul

A 38-year-old man remained in custody at Santry Garda station last night after gardaí discovered up to €1 million worth of cannabis in the car he was driving.

Members of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and uniformed gardaí discovered the drugs when they searched the car on the M50 near the Ballymun interchange on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, two men remained in Garda custody last night after an estimated €300,000 worth of cannabis and cocaine and a firearm were discovered in a raid on a house in Dublin city on Saturday.

Gardaí arrested three men, in their 40s and 50s, after a vehicle was stopped on Lombard Street. A house at Windmill Lane, Sir John Rogerson's Quay, was subsequently raided.

One of the three has been released pending the preparation of a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The two others are being held for questioning.

Three to face riot charges

Three people arrested over the weekend in connection with the riots in Dublin city centre are to appear in court later this month.

Two of those arrested on Saturday morning, a 32-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, are due to appear at Dublin District Court on March 29th. The third person, a male juvenile, will appear before the children's court on March 16th.

All three have been released pending their court appearances.

Conductor taken ill during concert

The distinguished German conductor Kurt Masur was taken ill in Dublin yesterday afternoon, leading the National Concert Hall to cancel the second half of his concert with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital, where his condition was described as stable.

Prescott visits Killarney

Britain's deputy prime minister John Prescott paid an unexpected visit to Muckross House in Killarney on Saturday evening. He and his wife, Pauline, took a guided tour of the house with four other members of his party.

Mr Prescott was accompanied by a number of detectives and emphasised he was on a private visit. It is understood he and his party spent the weekend locally.

The stately home hosted Queen Victoria and a large party of family and friends in 1861.
