A round-up to today's other court stories in brief
Boy awarded €25,000 for buggy crash
A seven-year-old boy, who was left with a disfigured big toe as a result of an incident when he was a toddler when a car crashed into his buggy, has been awarded €25,000 in the Circuit Civil Court.
Oisín Quinn for Max Byrne, Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, told Judge Joseph Mathews that Max's mother was pushing him in his buggy when the incident took place. Max was 16 months old.
Mr Quinn said a car driven by an 80-year-old had mounted the footpath and crashed, hitting the buggy. Max's mother was also seriously injured.
Admits having pirate radio gear
A man used his home to house equipment which provided the signal for two pirate radio stations, Dublin District Court heard yesterday.
Anthony Hogarty (60), unemployed, admitted having apparatus for illegal broadcasting, making it available to others and supplying electricity for it at his home in Ballyedmonduff, Sandyford, Dublin, on May 24th, 2005.
The equipment provided the signal for pirate stations Sun 80s and Jack FM.
He was prosecuted by the Commission for Communications Regulation, which had called to the house four or five months earlier and warned him to stop, the court heard.
Seán Costello, solicitor for the commission, said the stations, located elsewhere, would transmit to him and the equipment in his home would then broadcast the signal.
Hogarty told the court the broadcasting was intermittent, and he never received any money for it.
"I was told it was amateur radio and, if it was successful, I would get rent in the future."
Judge Anne Watkin, after hearing he had no previous convictions, had a number of medical problems and was living on his own, dismissed the charges under the Probation Act.
