Gardaí  investigate fatal collision

Gardaí are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred yesterday at Skeog, Burt, Burnfoot, Co Donegal. A man in his 20s was fatally injured when the vehicle he was driving was in a collision with a lorry at approximately 2pm. The driver of the lorry and his passenger were unhurt.

The man who was killed in a fatal road traffic collision Monday afternoon near Roscrea, Co Tipperary has been named as Gareth Turner (27), from Carrig, Birr, Co Offaly.

Man charged with murder remanded

The solicitor representing a Clare businessman charged with the murder of Limerick doorman Brian Fitzgerald claimed yesterday his client was being held in custody "on the word of two convicted crooks".

Defence solicitor Eugene O'Kelly made his comments at Limerick District Court yesterday where his client, Anthony Kelly, was remanded in custody for a further two weeks by Judge Tom O'Donnell.

Mr Kelly (49) of Cragg House Kilrush, Co Clare, is charged with the murder of 34 year-old Brian Fitzgerald at Brookhaven Walk, Mill Road, Corbally, on November 29th, 2002.

Insp Pat Connolly said that evidence in the case was not ready and applied for the matter to be adjourned for four weeks.

Mr Kelly is due to appear before the court again on December 5th next.

Drug dealer jailed for 15 months

A drug dealer was sentenced to 15 months in prison yesterday after gardaí, who raided two houses where she had been staying, found substantial amounts of drugs and large amounts of cash in her wallet. Elaine Kinneen (48), of 18 Raleigh Row, Galway, and 12 Kilderry House, Lower Fairhill Road, Galway, pleaded guilty to selling ecstasy and cocaine and having the drugs along with smaller quantities of cannabis in her possession on two separate dates last December and again last May.

Judge Mary Fahy sentenced Kinneen to five months in prison for possessing ecstasy for sale or supply on December 31st last, a consecutive five-month sentence for having cocaine for sale or supply on May 3rd, and a five-month consecutive sentence for having ecstasy for sale or supply on that date.

Man admits to holding up bank

A man has admitted to robbing €5,500 from AIB in Celbridge almost two years ago. Jason Campbell (26) of Donghmore Crescent, Tallaght, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to the robbery on November 26th, 2004.

Judge Michael White adjourned sentencing to next December.

Ex-MEP to contest Kildare seat for FG

Fine Gael has added the former MEP and farm leader, Alan Gillis, to the party's ticket for the Kildare South constituency at the forthcoming general election, writes Stephen Collins. Mr Gillis was a Fine Gael MEP from 1994 to 1999. He was president of the Irish Farmers' Association from 1990 to 1994.
