Italians want CIA agents to stand trial
ROME - Italian prosecutors have asked a judge to order CIA agents and Italian spies to stand trial on charges of kidnapping a terrorism suspect and flying him to Egypt, where he says he was tortured.

Sumatra facing another tsunami
WASHINGTON - Another big tsunami could hit Sumatra within the next few decades, flooding densely populated regions south of where a giant wave hit in December 2004, US and Indonesian researchers predicted yesterday.
The same big geologic fault, called a megathrust, that caused the 2004 tsunami, continues to run parallel to the southeast, along the Indian Ocean coast of Sumatra, with the potential to a affect areas to the south, the scientific team reported. - (Reuters)
Turks riot over child rape case
ISTANBUL - One man was shot dead and nearly 100 people were injured in clashes in eastern Turkey between security forces and an armed mob trying to lynch a confessed child rapist, authorities said yesterday.
The 3,000-strong crowd fought running battles with security forces in the town of Sirnak over a 12-hour period on Monday, outside the hospital where the man was being treated for head injuries inflicted by fellow inmates in his jail cell. - (Reuters)
'Terrorist' tag action fails
BERLIN - The daughter of Ulrike Meinhof, a leading member of West Germany's militant Red Army Faction, failed yesterday in her attempt to sue a newspaper for maligning her by describing her as a "terrorist's daughter". Bettina Roehl (44) had tried to sue the online edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for an article in 2003.
The left-wing Red Army Faction, led by Meinhof, Andreas Baader and Gudrun Ensslin, committed dozens of murders mainly in the 1970s and 1980s in their struggle against what they saw as fascism in German society. - (Reuters)
Pavarotti not to attend concert
ROME - Opera superstar Luciano Pavarotti will not attend a concert today that would have marked his first appearance since a cancer operation four months ago, prompting Italian media to speculate about his health.
Local organisers had said Pavarotti (71) had been billed to appear, although not sing, at a theatre in Bergamo where he was to be given an award named after Gaetano Donizetti, the 19th- century composer born in the northern Italian city. - (Reuters)
Spain reopens Iraq death case
MADRID - Spain could seek the extradition of three US soldiers after its Supreme Court said yesterday it had reopened a murder investigation into the killing of Spanish cameraman José Couso during the Iraq invasion.
The Supreme Court overturned a decision earlier this year by a lower tribunal to close the case brought by Couso's family, who had requested the arrest of the three soldiers, a court spokesman said. - (Reuters)

NEW YORK - Former Wimbledon champion Chris Evert's second husband has been awarded more than a quarter of her fortune as the couple's divorce was finalised after 18 years of marriage.
