Two in court over body in burnt out car
Two men appeared before Galway District court yesterday in connection with an ongoing Garda investigation into the discovery of a man's body which was found in the back of a burned out car on the outskirts of Galway city last week.
Tom McDonagh (26) Lios na Run, Ballybane, Galway, was further remanded in custody until April 12th next, while co-accused Tom Sweeney (23) Castle Park, Ballybane, Galway, was further remanded on bail to appear before the court again in May.
Guilty to assault on daughter (5)
A Nigerian woman who beat her young daughter because she kissed a boy in the school yard has received a 12 month suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
The 37-year-old woman, who lives in north Dublin and cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to her then five-year-old daughter on a date between October 17th and 20th, 2003.
Man jailed on child porn charge
A man who was extradited from Wales last year after being jailed there for possession of child pornography has been given a two year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for a similar offence.
Anthony Luckwill (33), Monastery Walk, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to possession of nine images and three text files involving adolescent boys engaged in sexually explicit acts. The materials were found in his room at a Salvation Army-run accommodation at Granby Row, on February 13th, 2001.
Guilty plea in publican robbery
A father of two who held a publican at gunpoint to rob his €40,320 takings has been remanded in custody by Judge Katherine Delahunt pending sentence.
Derek Duffy (23), Fortlawn, Blanchardstown, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to the robbery of TPA Smith at his west Dublin home, five charges of dangerous driving, possession of a firearm with intent to rob, the unlawful use of a car and possession of cocaine for sale or supply on March 18th, 2005.
His co-accused, David Stafford (26), St Finn's Road, Cabra, who pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to rob was jailed for six years last November.
Judge Delahunt adjourned sentencing to a date next month to allow her time to consider Stafford's case but revoked Duffy's bail as she said the offence was a very serious one.
Private case withdrawn
A private prosecution against farmer Cyril Hobson, Kilmagig House, Avoca, was withdrawn when the case came before Arklow court yesterday. The case had been taken by Anthony Byrne, Station Road, Avoca, the father of one of the two teenage school girls who were killed as Mr Hobson was driving his tractor and trailer laden with bales of silage at Avoca on June 28th, 2003.
At Wicklow Circuit Court in March, Cyril Hobson was found not guilty by a jury in a case of dangerous driving causing the death of the two girls taken by the State.
Nurse's aid guilty of assault
An Australian nurse's aid has been remanded on bail pending sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for shoving a glass into the face of a woman she thought was interested in her boyfriend.
Dolores Garcia (29) Lower Rathmines Road, Rathmines, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Ruth Clarke on January 14th, 2005.
Judge Katherine Delahunt adjourned sentencing to allow her consider a number of testimonials that were before the court on behalf of Garcia who she was told had previously "an impeccable character".
