Raw sewage discharged on to beach

Raw sewage discharged into a stream which runs across Enniscrone beach in Co Sligo, a beach with Blue Flag status, led to a temporary bathing ban on Saturday.

The overflow of untreated effluent from the local sewerage system was caused by a power failure. Bathers were allowed back into the water after a clean- up by Sligo County Council.

Holiday homes TV licence row

Councillor Patrick O'Donovan (FG) from Newcastlewest, Co Limerick, has called on the Department of the Arts, Culture and Tourism to halt what he called "a concerted campaign against domestic tourism".

People who holiday at home in mobile homes have been targeted in a summer campaign by TV licence inspectors. They were angry that they had been forced to pay a double licence fee of €310, even though they only used their holiday homes for two or three weeks a year.

Mr O'Donovan said he had been contacted by many constituents visited by licence inspectors during summer breaks in Ballybunion and Ballyheige.

"I find it unbelievable that people who go on holidays for a few weeks of the year and who sit in their mobile home at night, and have already paid a licence fee, are subjected to this," he said.

He said the TV licence should be transferable from the principal private residence to the holiday home during a holiday period.

"Nobody, not even superman, can watch two televisions at the same time, and I find it unbelievable that families who choose to stay at home year after year and contribute to the Irish tourism sector would be treated in this fashion."

A spokesman for An Post said it was only in the last year that pressure had come from the Department of Communications to enforce licensing for holiday homes.

Murder vigil outside Ice House

Hundreds of people are expected to gather outside the home of the murdered Dundalk mother Irene White today in a vigil organised by her family and friends.

Ms White was found dead on April 6th, 2005, and gardaí have renewed their appeal for information about a man seen fleeing the vicinity of her home, the Ice House, around the time she was stabbed to death.

The vigil is being held at 12.30pm to mark the exact time Ms White's body was found by her 79-year-old mother Maureen McBride.

The dead woman shared the house with her three children and was estranged from her husband Alan.

Ms McBride died just a few months later on what should have been Irene's 44th birthday.

Ms White's sister Anne Delacassian said: "As I stand in front of the house I will reflect on exactly who dared to take my sister's life and who put my elderly mother through the torment of finding her beautiful daughter savagely murdered in her home."

Gardaí investigate double stabbing

Gardaí in Carrick-on- Shannon, Co Leitrim, are questioning a second Polish national after an assault in the town on Friday night left two men injured.

Two Polish nationals aged 26 and 33 were removed to Sligo General Hospital after being stabbed. Their injuries are described as serious.

Teenager questioned on killing

A 17-year-old youth is being questioned about a killing of a Scottish man in the North eight days ago.

He had attended a loyalist band parade the night before in Maghera.

Three men have been charged with his murder. Detectives have also been questioning another teenager.

Protest over jailing of father

About 50 fathers are expected to protest outside Mountjoy Prison Dublin today over the jailing of a man for failing to pay child maintenance.

The lobby group Unmarried Fathers of Ireland has said the jailing of the 40-year-old man was "against his human rights".

The man was sentenced to three months in prison for failing to comply with a court order directing him to pay €1,500 a month to his ex- wife and her three children.

Ray Kelly, founder of Unmarried Fathers of Ireland, said the man was the biological father of just one of the children and that he was happy to pay maintenance for his son.

"He earns only €2,000 a month after tax and he is expected to pay over 75 per cent of that to his ex-wife. How can a 40-year-old man be expected to pay that?"

Talks on new carers strategy

Consultations will begin shortly on the drawing up of a new national carers strategy, Minister for Social and Family Affairs Séamus Brennan has said.

He said yesterday he was determined to deliver "substantially increased benefits, proper recognition payments and the services and supports which provide practical help for people who devote their time and energy to improving the quality of life for others".

He said that so far this year, more than €40 million had been paid out to more than 30,000 carers from an extended grant scheme for respite care. The respite grant scheme has, since June, increased from €1,000 to €1,200 and is now available to all carers regardless of their means.
