Company fined €45,000 for safety breaches

A civil engineering and construction company which breached health and safety legislation which resulted in the electrocution of an employee at an M50 site has been fined €45,000.

Ascon Limited, Kill, Co Kildare, was convicted unanimously by a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jury of failing to ensure a safe workplace for its employees, failing to provide suitable guards or barriers for overhead power lines and failing to have "proper goalposts and bunting" in place, resulting in injury to Michael O'Connell in Sandyford in December 2002.

The company had two previous convictions for health and safety breaches.

Man jailed for stealing car

A man who was jailed for four years earlier this week for his role in an attempted robbery, during which a garda was shot in the hand, has been given a three-year sentence by Judge Desmond Hogan for stealing a car.

Kenneth Williams (22), a father of one, Barry Avenue, Finglas, was also disqualified from driving for seven years.

Teenager jailed for stealing keys

A teenager who is serving a rape sentence has been given a four-year sentence by Judge Michael White at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for stealing keys from a man in Temple Bar.

Gavin Mulvaney (15), Myrtle Park, Dún Laoghaire, pleaded guilty to the theft in September 2004.

He will serve his sentence in Trinity House concurrent with a 3½-year sentence for oral rape and attempted rape in September 2005 of a young woman whom he also threatened to kill.

Woman remanded for threat to garda

A mentally ill woman who threatened a garda whom she had attacked before has been remanded in custody pending sentence by Judge Desmond Hogan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Catherine Finn (31), Windsor Drive, Blackrock, had received a two-year suspended sentence last year after she attacked Garda Fergal Long with a knife at Blackrock Garda station.

Judge Hogan adjourned sentencing for a psychiatric report from Finn's doctor.

Man conspired to defraud Axa

A vehicle recovery company employee who helped a compulsive gambler to attempt to defraud Axa insurance of €80,000 has been remanded for sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Fergal Keegan (38), Swords, admitted he conspired to defraud Axa in November 2002.

Judge Michael White remanded him on bail for the preparation of a community service report.

Not guilty verdict in rape trial

A jury at the Central Criminal Court has found a Lithuanian man (30) not guilty of rape almost two years ago. The jury acquitted the man of rape and oral rape of a woman in Co Westmeath in June 2004.

Man shot two others in legs

A man who shot two others in the legs, in 2001 and 2002, while high on drink and drugs, will be sentenced next month by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Anthony McDonagh (41), Dunsink Lane, Finglas, has since paid compensation totalling €38,000 to his victims.

The court was told there was no lasting ill-feeling.
