14 mediators die in Kenyan air crash

MARSABIT - A Kenyan military aircraft crashed into a hillside in bad weather yesterday and burst into flames, killing 14 people on a peace mediation mission, including two deputy ministers and four members of parliament.

"It is with deep sorrow and regret that I have received the news of the deaths of 14 members of a peace delegation," President Mwai Kibaki said in a televised address in which he announced three days of national mourning. - (Reuters)

120 people feared drowned in Ghana

ACCRA - About 120 people were feared drowned after a packed boat capsized on Saturday on Ghana's Lake Volta, one of the world's largest reservoirs, according to police.

"There were 150 passengers on board but only 30 have been rescued, the rest are feared dead," police spokesman Kwesi Ofori said. - (Reuters)

Two campaigners held in Congo

BRAZZAVILLE - The Congo Republic has arrested two anti-corruption campaigners who denounced misuse of the central African country's oil revenues, an international rights group has said.

Sunni Muslims held in Lebanon

BEIRUT - Lebanese authorities have arrested nine Sunni Muslim men suspected of planning to assassinate Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Shia group Hizbullah, security officials have said.

45 die in fire at electronic fair

NEW DELHI - At least 45 people died when a huge fire broke out at a crowded consumer electronics fair yesterday in the northern Indian city of Meerut. One official said the death toll could be twice as high.

Witnesses and officials said a short circuit had caused the fire, which spread rapidly to the polythene sheets covering a temporary enclosure. - (Reuters)
