The car used in the gun attack which took place in a green in Garryowen at 9.10pm on Monday was later found burned out in the Ballyclough area. The weapon used in the shooting has not been recovered.

Fire damages Clare Island hotel

A fire on Clare Island has extensively damaged the only hotel and led to renewed calls for a fully fledged fire-fighting service on the island. Up to 30 islanders, equipped only with fire extinguishers and fire blankets supplied by Mayo County Council, tackled the blaze at the Bay View Hotel which began shortly after midday.

After several hours, the volunteer fire teams brought the blaze under control but extensive smoke damage was caused to the interior of the building, which is owned by the O'Grady family.

Island manager Donal O'Shea said householders had come rushing to the scene and bravely tackled the flames with hand-held domestic fire extinguishers, issued to them recently by Mayo County Council.

It is understood there were about 10 people staying in the hotel when the fire took place but nobody was injured.

Monaghan hospital meetings

A number of local authorities have announced plans to stage a series of emergency public meetings to discuss the removal of all acute services from Monaghan General Hospital at the end of September.

He said they were "already at over-capacity and unable to cope safely with the present workload".

Mayor of Carrickmacross Matt Carthy revealed plans for a public meeting in the town on August 28th and the mayor of Ballybay, councillor Eugene Duffy, announced plans for a similar public meeting in that town the next day.
