Inquiry begins into fatal fall of worker

An investigation by the Health and Safety Authority and gardaí is under way in Cahersiveen, Co Kerry, after a father of two died when he fell through the roof of an outhouse, writes Anne Lucey

Kevin Griffin (41), Kilognaveen, Cahersiveen, was working on a roof of a unit on a farm in the early afternoon of Saturday near Cahersiveen when he fell 4.8m (16ft) on to a concrete floor.

The father of two teenage children was removed to Kerry General Hospital in Tralee, where he died.

Supt Michael O'Donovan of Cahersiveen said the Health and Safety Authority was notified and was involved in the investigation. A postmortem is expected to be carried out this morning.

Man (19) missing in Donegal

Concern was growing last night for the safety of a young man who has not been seen since the early hours of Friday morning.

Darren McGinley (19) was last seen leaving the Pulse nightclub on Port Road, Letterkenny, at 2am on Friday.

He is described as being 1.80m (5ft 11in) in height and weighs 17 stone.

He has black hair, which is cut short.

Mr McGinley is a native of Marian Avenue, Glencolmcille, but has been living at the student apartment complex on Port Road, adjacent to Heatons, in recent months.

He is a student at Letterkenny Vocational School.

Arrests after police attacked in Derry

Nine people were charged yesterday following attacks on police during violence in Derry in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Arrests were made after one officer received a head injury when struck by a bottle when a gang of up to 40 hurled missiles at police in the city's Shipquay Street.

Eight of those arrested were charged in connection with the attack. Charges included assault on police and disorderly behaviour.

They were bailed by police to appear at Derry Magistrates Court on January 8th.

The ninth person was charged over the assault of a man who suffered head injuries in an attack an hour after the attack on police. - (PA)

Woman alleges rape during party

Gardaí have begun an investigation after a young woman reported that she was raped during a house party in Baltimore near Skibbereen in west Cork in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The woman, in her late 20s/early 30s, contacted gardaí on Saturday morning and said she had been raped by a man known to her at a house party.

The woman was later medically examined at the sexual assault Unit of the South Infirmary Victoria Hospital in Cork.
