One dead as tornado hits New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS- One person was killed and at least 19 people were injured yesterday when a tornado swept through New Orleans districts still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.
The lone death was an 86-year-old woman living in a government-provided trailer in the Gentilly section. An emergency centre said 19 people were taken to local hospitals with injuries. - (Reuters)
Islamist bombs in Algeria kill six
MUSTAFA- Seven bombs went off almost simultaneously in Algeria yesterday, killing six people east of the capital Algiers, in an elaborate assault by suspected Islamist rebels.
Residents said four of the attacks targeted police stations. The al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility, al-Jazeera TV said. - (Reuters)
Galloway may face oil money inquiry
LONDON- Allegations that George Galloway may have broken UN sanctions by receiving oil money from Saddam Hussein have been sent to Scotland Yard by the Serious Fraud Office.
The office has recommended that police open an investigation, and talks are taking place with the Crown Prosecution Service. Mr Galloway denies any impropriety. - (Guardian service)
Cézanne painting found in Italy
ROME- A painting by the French master Paul Cézanne, a reproduction of Veronese's Meal at the House of Simon the Pharisee, which has not been seen in public for more than 60 years, has been rediscovered in Italy.
Francesca Bardazzi, the co-curator of a forthcoming exhibition in Florence, came across the early work in a private collection. "It was probably done between 1860 and 1870 when Cézanne used to go to the Louvre to copy the masterpieces of the past," said Ms Bardazzi. - (Guardian service)
Omar Sharif hit attendant in face
BEVERLY HILLS- Actor Omar Sharif pleaded no contest yesterday to hitting a Beverly Hills parking attendant in the face and was sentenced to probation and anger management counselling. - (Reuters)
