Five years for escaping custody
A man who escaped from custody while serving a prison sentence for manslaughter has been jailed for five years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Derek Glennon (23) Stanaway Road, Crumlin, Dublin was jailed in January 2004 after he pleaded guilty to the unlawful killing of Neil King at Davitt Road on December 16th, 2002.
Glennon killed the cyclist when he was trying to avoid gardaí after being caught driving a stolen car.
While serving his sentence Glennon was escorted to St James's hospital by three prison officers. He was outside smoking when a man approached and pointed a gun at the officer to whom he was handcuffed. The officer was threatened and Glennon was released.
Community service for assault
Two southwest Dublin men involved in a violent assault which left one of their victims in intensive care may have the option of doing community service instead of going to jail.
James Maher (23), Rathdrum Road, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Richard Mahon on February 2nd, 2004, at Bangor Road, Crumlin. Damien McCann (24), Walkinstown Park , pleaded guilty to violent disorder on the same occasion.
Guilty plea in false bomb case
A man who caused havoc for thousands of travellers when his false bomb claim brought Dublin airport to a standstill last July has been remanded for sentence. John McHugh (49), Mountjoy Square, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to knowingly making a false statement that he was in possession of an explosive substance on July 4th, 2006.
Dublin man admits role in riot
A west Dublin man has admitted taking part in a riot at the Love Ulster Parade in the city centre last year. Mark Freer (29), Russell View, Jobstown, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to using or threatening to use violent behaviour with others on O'Connell Street on February 22nd, 2006.
Westmeath man held for sentencing
A Westmeath man has been remanded for sentence for his role in a riot during last year's Love Ulster Parade in Dublin city centre. John Saunders (39), Galway Road, Kinnegad, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to using or threatening to use violent behaviour with others on February 22nd 2006 in O'Connell Street.
Cosmetic surgery case settled
A 54-year-old housewife alleged in a court yesterday that she had been left with scarred eyelids following cosmetic surgery.
Circuit Court president Mr Justice Matthew Deery was told Joan Burns, Rory O'Connor Park, Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, had settled a €38,000 damages claim for personal injury.
Ms Burns had sued the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, Owenstown Park, Mount Merrion, Dublin, and consultant general surgeon Dr Hassan Salumain, on the grounds of alleged negligence.
