Wexford manslaughter case adjourned
The case of a Co Wexford couple charged with the manslaughter of the woman's mother has been adjourned until February 28th. Eleanor Joel (32) and her partner, Jonathan Costen (34), were remanded on continuing bail at Enniscorthy District Court yesterday. They were charged last month with the manslaughter and reckless endangerment of Evelyn Joel (59), who had been living with them at the Cluain Dara estate, Enniscorthy.
Man charged with sex assault
A 26-year-old man who appeared at Tralee District Court yesterday has been sent forward for trial to the Circuit Criminal Court in Tralee on charges of sexual assault, assault, false imprisonment, theft and demanding money from a woman and her family in Co Kerry last August. Judge James O'Connor ordered that he cannot be named.
The man was last week sent forward for trial on charges of false imprisonment, sexual assault and assaulting a woman in the Leinster area last November 19th.
Judge criticises drink-drive law
A District Court judge has criticised a law that he must ban a first-offence drink-driver for two years. Judge Desmond Zaidan said at Dungloe Court: "To my mind putting someone who has no previous convictions off the road for two years is severe punishment."
Siobhán Tracey (29), Quay Road, Dungloe, admitted driving at 3.50am last June 5th with twice the permitted limit of alcohol. She was also fined €400.
Public order arrests in Glamire
A number of public order arrests were made at a halting site in Glamire, Co Cork, yesterday. Gardaí were called to the site after windows of a nearby house were smashed.
Top engineer to visit Limerick
An engineer who has worked on some of the tallest buildings in the world is to visit Limerick as part of an event aimed at attracting young people to careers in engineering. Leslie Robertson worked as a structural engineer on the former World Trade Centre in New York.
