Attacked with meat cleaver in Dublin

A man was treated in hospital yesterday after being attacked with a meat cleaver in Dublin.

Gardaí were called to St Teresa's Gardens in Dolphin's Barn on the southside of the city shortly before 6am yesterday morning, after being alerted to a row in the area.

They discovered a 25-year-old man with serious hand injuries, including a broken thumb and finger. He also had lacerations to his body and he told gardaí he had been attacked by a person armed with a meat cleaver.

Students protest at US embassy

US president George Bush was advised "not to be guided by the example of Pontius Pilate" yesterday in a protest against alleged extraordinary rendition flights and torture by US authorities.

Organised by Church of Ireland students for the ministry, it began with a procession from St Bartholomew's Church in Ballsbridge, Dublin, to the US embassy nearby, where a prayer service was held.

Making waves for visually impaired

A group of 12 boating enthusiasts from Co Mayo yesterday announced an expedition around the coast of Ireland to raise money for visually impaired children, writes Iveren Yongo.

On July 15th two crews, led by Tony Kennedy and John McLoughlin, will set off from Achill on a 900-nautical mile voyage, with a back-up team tracking them on land. The project will raise funds for St Joseph's Pre-School for the Visually Impaired in Drumcondra, Dublin.

Three questioned over armed raid

Three men were being questioned by gardaí yesterday following an armed robbery at the Mace store in Blanchardstown village, Dublin. Two staff members were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The three suspects, all aged in their 20s, are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
