Man charged with murder in Mountjoy
A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a prisoner in Mountjoy jail last year. Gary Douch (21) was strangled and beaten to death in a holding cell in the presence of a number of other prisoners on August 1st.
Stephen Egan (23), Belcamp Crescent, Coolock, was charged in Dublin District Court yesterday with his murder.
Gardaí applied for a remand in custody for a week and there was no objection from the defence.
Judge Timothy Lucey assigned free legal aid and remanded him in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court on April 18th.
Douch was a drug addict who had served time for various offences. He was killed in one of Mountjoy's so-called "protection cells". He was found by prison staff smeared with excrement.
The other prisoners in the cell had not raised the alarm fearing for their own safety.
Five held over death of Pole
Five people were being questioned by gardaí in Limerick last night in connection with the suspicious death of a Polish man earlier this week.
Four men and a woman were arrested at various locations in the city yesterday morning in connection with the death of Dariusz Wiskowski (26) last Monday morning.
He had been attending a party in the Hawthorns estate of Brierfield in Castletroy, when he was discovered at the foot of the stairs with serious head injuries.
Postmortem results revealed he had been the victim of a serious assault but people who were at the party have told gardaí that he also fell down the stairs.
The five people, all Polish and Lithuanian nationals, were being held last night at Henry Street and Roxboro Garda stations in Limerick.
Independent to run for Greens
A Co Monaghan barrister who is also an Independent member of Monaghan County Council, has been selected by the Green Party to contest the general election in the five-seat Cavan- Monaghan constituency.
Vincent Martin was elected to Carrickmacross Town Council in 1999 and to Monaghan County Council in 2004.
Mr Martin said yesterday the main issue of his campaign would be a "total commitment" to Monaghan and Cavan general hospitals.
He would also be actively campaigning for the restoration of rail services in Monaghan and Cavan.
Downes to run Culture Ireland
A Dublin arts consultant is to take the helm of Culture Ireland as its first chief executive officer with a €4.5 million budget.
Eugene Downes said he was delighted to accept the post and the challenge.
Mr Downes, who has advised Government bodies on international arts strategy and managing cultural events abroad since 2000, will take up the post with Culture Ireland at the end of next month.
The appointment comes two months after Culture Ireland became an independent statutory body.
