New funds for homeless welcomed
Organisations working with the homeless have welcomed the provision of almost €40 million to tackle the problem in Dublin. The money is part of the Government's strategy to eliminate both long-term homelessness and the need for emergency short-term accommodation. Almost half the funds will go to voluntary organisations working with homeless people in the city.
Another €13.3 million has being allocated to the four Dublin local authorities for the provision of private sector emergency accommodation (mainly in bed and breakfasts), while a further €7.7 million is being earmarked for the provision of more permanent accommodation.
Focus Ireland, which is receiving almost €4 million, said the money would help the homeless move into permanent accommodation.
Man questioned on carjacking death
Gardaí are still questioning a man in connection with the murder of an Estonian national during a carjacking in the early hours of Monday morning.
The man, who was arrested in north Dublin on Monday afternoon, is still being questioned at Coolock Garda station. Another man, who was questioned in Swords station, was released without charge, and a file is being prepared by the DPP.
Victims of traffic collision named
The victims of Monday's fatal road traffic collision in Longford have been named as Florence Breen, Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, who was in her 80s, and 60-year-old Ann Marie Doran of Coolarty, Longford.
Mother of six gets six-months' jail
A mother of six whose three-year-old son was taken from her because she was too drunk to take care of him was sentenced to six months' imprisonment in Tallaght Court for breaching a probation bond.
Doctors urge HSE to fund TB care
The country's respiratory health professionals have called on the HSE to provide the necessary resources to ensure that tuberculosis (TB) is adequately controlled in the wake of the current outbreak of the disease in Cork. The Irish Thoracic Society want the HSE to review national TB services urgently.
Schools football final ends in chaos
A schools' colleges final was marred by ugly scenes yesterday afternoon after supporters poured onto the pitch at the Austin Stack Park, in Tralee, Co Kerry and proceeded to tackle players.
The incident at the Munster Colleges Frewen Cup final between St Brendan's College, Killarney, and Tralee CBS took place when the final whistle was blown and the Killarney school had won.
