Limerick agencies head appointed
Minister for the Environment Dick Roche has announced that John Fitzgerald is to act as interim chairman of two Limerick regeneration agencies.
The former Dublin city manager will head the two bodies which tackle issues of social exclusion in Moyross and other disadvantaged areas of Limerick city.
Last October Mr Fitzgerald was appointed by the Government to lead an initiative to address social exclusion, crime and disorder in Moyross and elsewhere.
He presented his report to the Cabinet Committee on Social Inclusion recently and the Government agreed to implement his recommendations.
Call for regulation of charity sector
The next government must take action to regulate the charities sector, a conference on community and voluntary work has been told.
More than 200 representatives of voluntary and community groups heard yesterday that the sector had been waiting 15 years for regulation which was finally drawn up in the Charities Legislation Bill published last month.
Book on Mid-East conflict launched
Human rights need to be put at the heart of attempts to solve problems in the Middle East, according to Dr Maurice Manning, president of the Irish Human Rights Commission.
Dr Manning was speaking at the launch of The Resting Place of the Moon by Felicity Heathcote, a writer and psychologist who has been working in Jerusalem with the UN and NGOs.
The book is based on the conflict in the occupied villages and towns of the West Bank. All profits are going to peace and humanitarian groups in Palestine and Israel.
Travolta's jet leaves Shannon
The luxury Boeing 707 aircraft belonging to Hollywood actor John Travolta has finally left Shannon airport, where it spent the past month undergoing maintenance after a problem developed with one of its engines.
Travolta's private jet, which he owns and flies himself, was grounded at Shannon airport on April 2nd after a problem developed with an engine.
