Dún Laoghaire councillors in clamping vote

Councillors in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown are to vote this evening on a motion directing county manager Owen Keegan not to introduce clamping in the county, writes Fiona Gartland.

The section 140 motion, tabled by Labour councillors Jane Dillon Byrne and Carrie Smyth, instructs the county manager to adhere to the policy adopted by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in 2002 that clamping would not be a part of the pay-and-display parking scheme.

Amicus, the union that is representing the two workers, has accepted an invitation to attend the Labour Relations Commission on May 29th.

Two men arrested after armed raid

Two men were in custody in Longford last night after being arrested in connection with the second armed raid on a rural post office in six months. Community leaders in south Longford have been critical of the Garda presence in the area.

The latest raid saw a lone gunman walk into Keenagh post office shortly after midday on Saturday.

The gunman forced the Mary Belton to hand over cash from behind the counter before rushing from the premises, but it is believed an eyewitness was able to provide gardaí with the number plate of the car.

"Two men were arrested in an apartment in Ballymahon shortly afterwards," a Garda spokesman said yesterday. It is not known how much the raiders escaped.
