Roofer fell to death at airport
A roofer fell to his death while working on the new baggage hall in Dublin airport, a court heard yesterday.
His employers, Jameson Roofing Specialists Ltd, Brownstown Road, Portadown, Co Armagh, face eight summonses of failing to have proper health and safety procedures in place when the accident occurred on July 22nd, 2005.
Dublin District Court heard it was alleged the company failed to put the necessary safety system in place while Danny Marron (61) was working on roof cladding outside the new baggage hall.
He fell backwards while standing on top of a 12-feet high by two-feet wide wall and received fatal injuries, Dara Hayes, counsel for the National Authority for Occupational Safety and Health, told the court.
Judge Dympna Cusack refused jurisdiction and ordered a book of evidence be prepared so the case could go forward to the Circuit Court for trial.
Couple admit blackmail charge
A Romanian man and his Irish wife pleaded guilty yesterday to blackmailing a man, using an incriminating video they claimed to have of him, by demanding €24,500 from him with menaces over a two-year period.
Petre and Margaret Zsiga, of Seacrest, Knocknacarra, Galway, pleaded guilty before Galway Circuit Criminal Court to demanding €14,500 from Brendan Lawless, Clonfert Avenue, Portumna, Co Galway, in September 2005 for the return of the alleged incriminating video recording of him.
The couple also pleaded guilty to demanding a further €10,000 with menaces on June 29th, 2006.
Judge Raymond Groarke remanded both accused on continuing bail for sentence on July 20th next.
Man convicted of sex assaults
A Co Westmeath man has been convicted by a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court of sexually assaulting three girls and has been remanded for sentence later by Judge Joseph Matthews.
He now lives in Co Roscommon and sexually assaulted the girls, aged seven to 11 years, at north Dublin and Roscommon addresses variously on April 16th and September 10th, 2002, and on May 1st, 2005.
Burglar remanded for sentence
A crack cocaine addict who carried out 16 house burglaries within a year in various city suburbs has been remanded in custody pending sentence by Judge Katherine Delahunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Keith Hogan (29) of Balfe Road East, Crumlin, pleaded guilty to nine charges of trespass and theft, seven charges of trespass with intent to commit theft, assault causing Det Garda Pat Fagan harm and two charges of damaging windows in the properties between May 6th, 2005 and April 23rd, 2006.
Sentencing of addict deferred
Sentencing of a teenage addict with 49 criminal convictions, who ransacked two houses within the space of 15 minutes, was yesterday adjourned because he had been remanded in custody for other offences.
The 16-year-old Tallaght boy had pleaded guilty at the Dublin Children's Court to burgling the houses at Laurel Park and Monastery Walk, in Clondalkin, on January 11th last.
