Two die on roads in Sligo and Dublin

Two men were killed in separate road collisions in Sligo and Dublin at the weekend. On Saturday evening, Martin Marren (88) of Toulestrane, Aclare, Co Sligo, died after his car left the road and collided with a tree at Stonepark, Aclare. He was the only occupant of the car.

On Friday, Dominic Matthews (47), North Circular Road, Dublin, was struck by a lorry on Dorset Street, Drumcondra at about 10.40pm. He was brought to the Mater hospital where he later died from his injuries.

A woman suffered two broken legs when she was the victim of a hit-and-run incident in Rathmines, Dublin yesterday. The pedestrian was struck by the car at about 3.20pm near the Portobello Bridge.

Gardaí stopped a car a short distance away and a female driver was questioned.

Six rescued from boat in Cork

Six people were rescued from an inflatable boat in Castletownbere Harbour, West Cork, yesterday morning after the Coast Guard was alerted that they were seen paddling out of the harbour on an inflatable tube banana boat shortly after 10am.

The six people "paddling to Bere Island" appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

The lifeboat crew arrived to the south side of Dinish Island to discover the five men and one woman in their early 20s had fallen into the water. They were assisted aboard and brought to Castletownbere pier where they were met by gardaí.

Carmichael Centre chief dies

The founder and chief executive of the Carmichael Centre in Dublin, Kate O'Sullivan, died suddenly at the weekend. She became ill on Thursday and was taken to the Mater hospital where she died on Friday.

Ms O'Sullivan (60) founded the Carmichael Centre for voluntary groups in 1988 and grew the organisation each year since then. It is now home to 45 voluntary groups and provides facilities and services for a further 350 organisations. Mary O'Connor, chairwoman of the Carmichael Centre described her as "one of the true leaders in the voluntary sector in Ireland.

Ms O'Sullivan is survived by her husband, Pat and two children, Carol and James.

Cocaine seized at Cork airport

Customs officers at Cork airport seized 4kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of upwards of €300,000 yesterday. A man and a woman, who are German passport holders were arrested yesterday morning shortly after they arrived in Cork from Nairobi via Amsterdam.

Body of man taken from river Moy

The body of a middle aged man was taken by local divers from the river Moy in Ballina, Co Mayo, late on Saturday night. He had fallen earlier from what is known locally as The Lower Bridge in the town.

Gardaí said foul play was not suspected.

Appeal after assaults in Donegal

Gardaí have appealed for assistance from members of the public and the licensed trade following a number of serious assaults in Letterkenny, Co Donegal night clubs over the weekend.

Three people were seriously injured in separate stabbing and ear biting incidents.
