Priest may face retrial on sex abuse charges

A Co Derry priest faces the possibility of a retrial after a jury yesterday failed to reach a verdict on two charges that he had sexually abused a teenage girl almost 30 years ago.

Fr Patrick Joseph Crilly, (63), Tobermore Road, Desertmartin, was acquitted by 10-2 majority verdicts of two counts of indecently assaulting the complainant between November 20th, 1978 and November 19th, 1980.

However, following an eight-day trial at the crown court in Derry, the jury was "inextricably divided" on two other similar charges between April 1st, 1977 and November 19th, 1978 starting when the complainant was aged 15.

Fr Crilly was released on continuing bail on the two outstanding charges.

Man injured after being hit by Luas

A man was injured yesterday evening after being struck by a Luas in Dublin. The pedestrian suffered leg injuries in the incident, which occurred at the Jervis Street stop on the Red Line at about 6.30pm.

He was attended to at the scene before being removed to the Mater hospital shortly after 7pm. His injuries are not said to be serious.

Services were suspended between Smithfield and Connolly Station as a result, but continued to operate between Smithfield and Tallaght until full service resumed at 8pm.

Veolia Transport, operators of the Luas, has begun an investigation into the incident.

Murder conviction appeal dismissed

A Co Louth man has lost his appeal against his conviction for the murder of a man in Dundalk on Christmas Eve 2003.

Kenneth Cunningham (32), a bricklayer, Woodview Park, Castletown Road, was jailed for life in April 2006 after he was found guilty by a jury at the Central Criminal Court of the murder of Laurence Garvey (59), a father of two, at Patrick Street, Dundalk.

His appeal against that conviction was dismissed yesterday in a reserved judgment by the three-judge Court of Criminal Appeal consisting of Mr Justice Joseph Finnegan, presiding, and sitting with Mr Justice Declan Budd and Mr Justice Paul Gilligan.

Man loses appeal over murder

The Court of Criminal Appeal has dismissed an appeal by a Dublin man against his conviction for the murder of a father-of-three who was stabbed 16 times after an all-day drinking session.

Alan Keogh (34), Wellmount Green, Finglas, Dublin, was jailed for life after he was convicted in May 2006 of the murder of Peter Mitchell (32) at Monasterboice Road, Crumlin, Dublin, in October 2003. He had denied murder but admitted the manslaughter of Mr Mitchell.

The three-judge CCA, consisting of Ms Justice Fidelma Macken, presiding, and sitting with Mr Justice Eamon De Valera and Mr Justice Brian McGovern, yesterday rejected his appeal.
