Mother is remanded in murder case
A psychiatrist who is accused of murdering her daughter has been remanded in custody until June 22nd to allow for the preparation of the book of evidence.
Dr Lynn Gibbs (46) Killure, Gowran, Co Kilkenny, is charged with the murder of her daughter Ciara (16) at the family home in November of last year.
She was found dead in the bath on November 26th by her father, Gerry, and brother when they returned from an overnight trip.
During a short hearing at Dún Laoghaire District Court yesterday, Supt Aidan Roche said he was confident that the book of evidence would be ready in the coming weeks.
Dr Gibbs is currently a patient at the Central Mental Hospital, Dundrum, Dublin. Defence solicitor Bobby Egars consented to the continuing remand which was granted by Judge Clare Leonard.
Traffic collision victim named
Gardaí yesterday named the man who died in a fatal road traffic collision in Donegal as Robert Christie (93), of Drumaweir, Greencastle, Co Donegal.
Two questioned over hoax device
Two men were being questioned by gardaí yesterday after a hoax device was found during the search of a house in north Dublin.
The men were being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act after gardaí uncovered the crude device in a raid on the house in Kilbarrack.
The Army explosives ordnance disposal unit used a remote-controlled sensor and found the device to consist of two pieces of metal tubing strapped together.
Grandmother image a winner
Student nurse Joanne Walsh, from Dublin, has won a trip to New York after a photograph of her grandmother won the Age Action Positive Ageing Week photographic competition.
Joanne's photograph of her mother, Paula, and her beaming grandmother, Ann, on top of Cape Town's Table Mountain was selected by the judges from more than 250 entries. The theme of the contest was positive images of older people and ageing in the community.
The winning entry will be used to promote Positive Ageing Week 2007, which takes place from September 28th to October 6th, and is sponsored by ESB customer supply.
Peace centre award for Quinn
The Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation has presented Senator Feargal Quinn and his wife Denise with a Peace Award in honour of their continued support for the centre and its aims.
The award was presented last night at the annual Glencree Business Club dinner in Dublin Castle, sponsored by Vodafone.
'Cré na Cille' film shortlisted
The feature film adaptation of celebrated Irish-language novel Cré na Cillehas been shortlisted at the Shanghai International Film Festival which takes place in June 16 -24.
The adaptation of the novel, written by Máirtín Ó Cadhain, was directed by Robert Quinn and produced by Ciarán Ó Cofaigh for ROSG, a Connemara-based film and TV company.
