Dublin man appears on murder charge

A 21-year-old man appeared at Dublin District Court yesterday charged with the murder of another man in Arklow, Co Wicklow, earlier this year.

Anthony O'Reilly, of Cleggan Park, Ballyfermot, Dublin, is accused of murdering Daniel McDonald on the main street of the town on February 2nd. Judge Cormac Dunne remanded Mr O'Reilly to Cloverhill Prison to appear again on June 7th.

Trinity creche closed after death

Trinity College Dublin has confirmed that its day-care nursery will remain closed until Tuesday following the death this week of an infant in its care.

The boy was pronounced dead on Tuesday after unsuccessful attempts at resuscitation by medical personnel at the college and at Temple Street Children's Hospital.

The college's counselling service and chaplaincy have been made available to help the family, staff and parents of other children at the nursery to cope with their grief. An autopsy was held at Temple Street hospital and the results will be known later.

14 accused of helping illegals

Fourteen people appeared before the Magistrates' Court in Derry yesterday accused of enabling non-EU nationals to illegally enter the UK.

The offences are alleged to have occurred at various locations on both sides of the Border in the northwest, including in the registrar of marriages offices in Stranorlar, in Letterkenny, in Derry and in Coleraine.

The 14 defendants include two Nigerian step-brothers who arrived in custody from Maghaberry Prison, two local men and 10 local women. They face a total of 54 charges and were remanded on continuing bail.

Yesterday's court appearances followed an investigation by the PSNI's Organised Crime Department assisted by the Garda National Immigration Bureau and by the Department of Justice.

Contact lens solution recalled

A widely-used contact lens solution has been withdrawn after US tests appeared to link it to a water-borne organism which can contribute to serious corneal infections.

Advanced Medical Optics said yesterday it was voluntarily recalling its COMPLETE® MoisturePLUS™ contact lens solution and it advised consumers to stop using the solution immediately.

Schizophrenic jailed for life

A paranoid schizophrenic who admitted battering his mother to death in a drunken rage was jailed for life yesterday and ordered to be transferred to a high-security mental hospital in Scotland.

At Belfast Crown Court Mr Justice Morgan told Séamus Lyttle (36), of Richmond Square, north Belfast, he would have to serve at least five years for the manslaughter of his mother, Maureen, on October 25th, 2005.
