McCanns speak of Irish support

The parents of four-year-old Madeleine McCann have spoken of the "overwhelming" support they have received from Ireland as the search for their missing daughter continues.

Gerry and Kate McCann's daughter has not been seen since disappearing from their holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia de Luz on May 3rd.

Speaking on RTE's Crimecall programme last night, Gerry McCann, whose family is from Donegal, said he is fully aware of the support they are receiving in Ireland. "The support has been tremendous... literally thousands of letters and other messages of support, just from Ireland alone," he said.

The McCanns have requested Irish people who were in the area in the weeks around May 3rd to upload any holiday photographs from the time that feature strangers in the background to a website, www.madeleine.ceoppload.com, in the hope that it might lead to new evidence emerging.

Motorcyclist killed in Wexford

A 40-year-old motorcyclist died on Monday night in Co Wexford after losing control of his bike, gardaí said yesterday. The man was driving on the R704 at Brownstown, New Ross. He was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital but died from his injuries.

Meanwhile, the van driver who died in a single vechicle crash in Co Roscommon on Monday, has been named as Stephen Nolan (20) of Ballinagare.

Gardaí rule out foul play in death

Gardaí have ruled out foul play in the case of a woman whose body was discovered at a remote area of Co Mayo on Monday. The 31-year-old's body was found at around 5.30am in Kilgalligan, Carrowtigue, in the northwest of the county. A postmortem yesterday ruled that it was an accidental death. An inquest will be held.

The body was found by gardaí after an early-morning call to Ballina Garda station. It is understood the woman had been camping in the area.

Miley named as Concern chairman

Jim Miley, founder and chief executive of MyHome.ie, has been appointed new chairman of aid agency Concern. He has been a member of the council of Concern and the agency's secretary for the past three years. Mr Miley first served with Concern in the 1980s when he worked as a volunteer in Ethiopia. "Those two years have left an indelible mark on me and have given me a life-long interest in Ethiopia," he said.He has worked with RTÉ as a television and radio broadcaster and also served as general secretary of Fine Gael.

Donegal to honour Packie Bonner

Ireland's former World Cup hero, goalkeeper Packie Bonner, will be given his county's highest honour next week. The Freedom of Co Donegal will be conferred at a civic reception on Monday.

Farmer accused of shooting boy

A farmer accused of shooting a boy in a school playground in Co Fermanagh, appeared at Dungannon Crown Court yesterday. Fergus Cleary (72), Ballydoolagh Road Garvary, Enniskillen denies unlawfully and maliciously wounding Darragh Somers.

The child, then aged five, was left fighting for his life after being hit in the back of the head as he played at St Patrick's Primary School, Mullanaskea, in April 2005. Surgeons carried out two operations to remove a rifle bullet from his skull before he recovered and was released from hospital.

The case was listed for September 20th in Omagh Crown Court and Mr Cleary was released on his own bail of £500 (€740). - (PA)
