Body of woman found in Clonmel

A postmortem will be carried out today on the body of a woman who was found in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, yesterday afternoon, writes Barry Roche.

Gardaí found the body of the woman in her mid-30s in a house at O'Connell Court at about 3.15pm. The scene has been preserved for technical examination.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau are expected to carry out an examination this morning before the body is removed to Wexford General Hospital, where the postmortem will be carried out.

Legal argument in trafficking trial

The trial of a man accused of trafficking illegal immigrants has continued in legal argument at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in the absence of the jury.

Olaitan Ilori (38), Oak Drive, Blessington, Co Wicklow, has pleaded not guilty to organising or facilitating the entry into the State in October 2004 of 14 Mauritian nationals, whom he knew or had reasonable cause to believe were illegal immigrants.

The hearing is expected to resume today before the jury and Judge Martin Nolan.

Drugs hidden in mother's house

A man who had cannabis and cocaine valued at more than €34,000 hidden in the house he shared with his mother has been sentenced to seven years, with two suspended, by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Paul Davis (20), Casement Park, Finglas, pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs in December 2005.

Det Garda Michael Doyle told Paul Carroll, prosecuting, that gardaí went to Davis's address and found cocaine and cannabis resin hidden in his bedroom and in the back garden.

'Slave to heroin' gets four years

A man who stole "as a slave to heroin" has been given a four-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for possession of stolen property and the unlawful use of two cars three years ago.

David Lynch (44), Claddagh Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin, was found guilty by a jury, following a three-day trial in January, of unlawful use of two cars, one at Lower Rathmines Road and another at Harold's Cross in November 2004. Lynch was also found guilty of possessing stolen property at Harold's Cross Road.

Judge Patricia Ryan imposed concurrent sentences totalling four years which she backdated to October 2005.

House fire ruling adjourned

A man who set fire to his late father's house "to get rid of the memories" has had his sentence adjourned at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Patrick Fitzsimons (44), Cromcastle Court, Coolock, Dublin, pleaded guilty to arson of a vacant house at Abbotstown Avenue, Finglas, on March 11, 2006.

Judge Frank O'Donnell adjourned sentencing to allow him to consider a lengthy psychiatric report.

Witnesses to April assault sought

Gardaí at Store Street, Dublin are appealing for witnesses to an assault on Sunday, April 29th, on a man in his 30s. He was assaulted by three men at Amiens Street, as he made his way home at about 1.50am and was later treated in hospital for his injuries.

The culprits fled in the direction of Busáras.
