Abandoned baby in care of HSE West
The HSE West is continuing to monitor the situation of a baby who was taken into care after being abandoned in Galway city, writes John Fallon.
The baby boy, who is about a year old, was left in a buggy inside the doorway of a house that was being renovated on Joseph's Avenue.
The baby's mother, who is in her 30s and from the city, has attended University College Hospital, Galway.
The baby was found last Friday when workmen renovating a house heard him crying.
Man pleads guilty to possessing device
A Co Carlow man pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court yesterday to possession of an explosive device.
Patrick Dermody (20), New Road, Leighlinbridge, admitted the unlawful possession of an improvised explosive device at Mount Leinster, Co Carlow, between October 1st and October 8th last year. He also pleaded guilty to having a double-barrelled shotgun and eight shotgun cartridges with intent to endanger life on October 25th last.
He was remanded in custody for later sentencing.
Two questioned on Cork drug dealing
Gardaí are to prepare files for the Director of Public Prosecutions after arresting and questioning two men about drug dealing in the greater Fermoy and Rathcormac areas of north Cork in the wake of the death of a local teenager earlier this week, writes Barry Roche.
Detectives from Fermoy raided two houses in the area and recovered small quantities of cocaine and cannabis with a street value of €7,000. Two men in their late 20s and early 30s were arrested under anti-drugs legislation and brought to Fermoy Garda station, where they were held for questioning before being released without charge.
The raids are part of follow-up operations after the death of Pádraig O'Keeffe (19) from Moulane, Rathcormac, in the early hours of June 18th. He died from a suspected drugs overdose after attending a party where cocaine was available.
Gardaí looking for pensioner find body
Gardaí searching for a pensioner who has been missing since Tuesday found a body in a river yesterday morning.
John Anthony Fahy (77) was last seen at his residence in Abbeyknockmoy, Co Galway, on Tuesday afternoon.
Galway mayor to sell car for charity
Galway's first Green mayor is to auction his environmentally friendly car for charity after completing his term of office.
Cllr Niall Ó Brolcháin turned down the courtesy Jaguar which comes with the office because of its high fuel emissions. Instead, he used a Toyota Prius car, which has a hybrid engine.
University unveils virtual archive
A new virtual archive has been unveiled by the department of history at the University of Limerick, writes Kathryn Hayes.
The aim of the archive, which comprises a collection of transcribed manuscripts and scanned historical data, is to digitise Irish family papers.
