McCartney trial delayed for third time

The trial of the man accused of murdering Robert McCartney outside a Belfast pub more than three years ago has been adjourned for a third time.

The trial of Terence Davison (51) is now to start tomorrow in the Belfast Crown Court before Mr Justice Gillen.

On trial alongside Mr Davison are two others charged with affray. They are James McCormick (39) and Joseph Fitzpatrick (47).

Last week the trial was postponed for 24 hours due to the absence of a key defence counsel.

A further delay was announced the following day because of legal reasons.

Reporting restrictions were imposed and have not been lifted.

Irish-American billionaire dies

The funeral is to take place in Boston tomorrow of Kiltimagh, Co Mayo-born billionaire Tom Flatley, one of America's wealthiest citizens.

Mr Flatley (76) built a real estate fortune worth €1.3 billion over the past half century, according to Forbes magazine.

He was instrumental in establishing the Morrison and Donnelly visa schemes and was a founding member of the Ireland Fund which provided funding to cultural and peace initiatives in Northern Ireland and in the Republic.

A former Mayo Person of the Year, Mr Flatley maintained a strong interest in happenings in his native Kiltimagh and funded various schemes for the town.

Man facing firearms charges

An Antrim man was charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court yesterday with possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Barry Petticrew (37), Ashdale, Station Rd, Randalstown, was charged with the unlawful possession of a Browning 9mm handgun and 10 rounds of 9mm parabellum calibre ammunition at Dundalk Western bypass, Ballynahattin, Dundalk, Co Louth on Saturday last.

Det Sgt Kieran Reidy told the court that he arrested Mr Petticrew yesterday outside Dundalk Garda station so that he could be brought before the Special Criminal Court and charged with both offences.

Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne, presiding at the three-judge court, remanded Mr Petticrew in custody until next week.

Stab case woman on more charges

A 22-year-old woman charged with stabbing a man at a house party has been rearrested and further charged in relation to the incident.

Claire Nolan appeared before Castlecomer District Court, Co Kilkenny, yesterday on two charges in connection with an incident in which a man in his early 20s was stabbed.

Det Sgt Martin Power, of Kilkenny Garda station, told Judge William Harnett he arrested Ms Nolan yesterday morning and charged her with assault causing serious harm.

Ms Nolan, Kilkenny Road, Castlecomer, is also charged with assault causing harm in connection with the same incident.

She was remanded on continuing bail to June 16th.

Cross-Border mayors' meeting

Belfast Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers and Lord Mayor of Cork Donal Counihan are travelling to Dublin to meet their counterpart, Dublin Lord Mayor Paddy Bourke, today. It will be the first time since 1955 that the holders of the three posts have met.

Ulster Unionist Mr Rodgers said in past decades it would not have been politically advisable for the lord mayors to have had such a meeting, but things were different now.

The three lord mayors will discuss recycling and waste management and visit a housing regeneration project in Dublin.

The two-day engagement will also include a joint courtesy call on President Mary McAleese.
