Man (20) killed in Tipperary road crash

A 20-year-old man died and three tourists were injured in a road traffic collision at Moorestown on the N24 between Clonmel and Cahir, Co Tipperary on Wednesday night.

Daniel Purtill, Woodview, Cahir, Co Tipperary, died when his car was in collision with another vehicle. The manager of a shop and garage in Mooncoin, Co Kilkenny, was returning from work at the time.

The second car, in which four people were injured, had been travelling from Shannon airport. Two of the injured were English, one was Dutch and the fourth was Irish. Gardaí said all four received serious injuries but none of these were life threatening.

Man held over sexual assault

Gardaí in Cork were last night continuing to question a 32-year-old man about a serious sexual assault on an Asian woman who was attacked as she waited for an early-morning bus.

The woman had arrived at Cork Airport late on Wednesday night and was waiting at the rear of the Bus Éireann depot at Parnell Place at about 5.45am for a bus to the west of Ireland when she was accosted.

The man grabbed the woman, who is in her 40s, and dragged her struggling down Dean Street, across Lower Oliver Plunkett Street and down O'Connell Street where he carried out a serious sexual assault.

Gardaí were alerted by a passer-by and arrested a 32-year-old man near the scene. He was later arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and detained at the Bridewell Garda station.

The woman, who has been living in Ireland for some time, was accompanied by a garda to her destination in the west of Ireland following her discharge from hospital.

Victim critical after assault

A 41-year-old man was in a critical condition in Cork University Hospital last night following an assault in Limerick city. Gardaí believe the victim may have been involved in an altercation at Convent Street, King's Island at 9pm on Wednesday.

Gardaí were not alerted about the man and his injuries until 5am yesterday after he presented to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, Limerick. He was transferred to Cork as his condition worsened and he underwent an operation for the removal of clots from his brain.

Gormley opens Clones library HQ

A new library headquarters for Co Monaghan was opened in Clones yesterday by Minister for the Environment John Gormley. The new centre, which is located on a site purchased five years ago, extends over 1,450 sq m, five times larger than the original library.
