McCreevy rules out return to national politics

EU commissioner Charlie McCreevy has ruled out any return to domestic politics once his five-year term is up next year. Mr McCreevy said yesterday he would not re-enter the political arena when his term ended in June.

"I made it quite clear that when I was going to Europe in 2004 that I was going to do it for five years and that was going to be my last stint in elected politics and that remains my position," he told Kildare FM.

Garda in freezing sea rescue

Tributes have been paid to the courage of a garda who swam out in freezing conditions to rescue a man from Galway Bay.

Garda Gerry Dunne, from Clifden, Co Galway, who is based in Salthill Garda station, assisted in the rescue which was completed by Galway's RNLI lifeboat, Dóchas.

The incident occurred late on Thursday night when a man was reported to have entered the sea near Whitestrand road in Lower Salthill at about 10pm.

Salthill gardaí were called to the scene and Garda Dunne swam out and brought the man into rocks about 150 feet from the shoreline.

Garda appeal after Dublin hit-and-run

Gardaí investigating a hit- and-run in south Dublin have appealed to the car-driver involved to contact them. The incident happened at about 5.45pm on Thursday on the Monkstown Road in Blackrock.

A 49-year-old woman was struck by a car, believed to be a Nissan Micra, as she was crossing the busy road. The car failed to stop.

The woman was taken to St Vincent's University Hospital, Elm Park where she was in a serious condition last night.

Rezoning bid by nuns rejected

Killarney Town Council has rejected an application by the town's Presentation nuns to rezone some of their property for development.

Councillors and planners said the reality was the nuns would not be the developers and intensive development of the nuns' lands would destroy views of a historic area.

The submission to change the zoning of one to two acres from the current social and community facilities designation at New Street to town centre facilities was made on behalf of the nuns.

U2 fans told to get on to fraud bureau

U2 fans who bought tickets for a concert at Slane Castle that was never scheduled to take place should contact the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation, the National Consumer Agency has said.

The tickets were advertised on a British website, www.globalticket shop.com, along with 25 other U2 dates throughout Europe that are not due to take place.

The agency said customers should exercise caution when buying tickets online and should only buy from reputable companies. U2 has also advised customers against buying the tickets. The dates have been withdrawn from the website.

Gorse fire put out on Achill Island

An extensive gorse fire which had threatened housing on Achill Island, Co Mayo, was brought under control by fire fighters last night. Achill and Westport fire units fought the blaze, which broke out near the village of Bunnacurry on the island. Mayo gardaí said no injuries had been reported.
