Man held over shooting dead of two released

A man has been released without charge following his arrest for questioning about the shooting dead of two men in Dublin's north inner city just over two weeks ago. The middle-aged Dubliner was arrested on Tuesday morning.

He was questioned at Store Street Garda station about the shooting dead in Summerhill of Michael “Roly” Cronin (35), Ballymun, and James Maloney (26), from the south inner city.

Licence for weight loss pill approved

An over-the-counter weight-loss pill is expected to be on sale across Europe within months after a drug company was given a licence by the European Commission to market the product across the region.

The pill, alli or orlistat, made by GlaxoSmithKline, has already been approved by the European Medicines Agency. The product stops some of the fat consumed being absorbed into the body and turning into extra pounds.

Fee for clippings at bring centres

Householders who take grass cutting to their local bring centre in Dublin will have to pay for the privilege from this week.

Dublin City Council has introduced a charge of €2 for an 80-litre bag and €16 for a skip bag for green waste at its four bring centres.

The council said the charge was introduced because it was having to process waste brought by people living in other local authority areas where charges were already in place.

Hundreds attend Rocca funeral

Hundreds of people gathered in Porterstown, Dublin, yesterday morning for the funeral of property developer Patrick Rocca.

St Mochta’s church was packed with family, friends and business associates gathered to pay their respects to Mr Rocca (42) and offer their condolences to his wife, Annette, and two sons, Patrick and Stuart, following his death on Monday.

Mr Rocca was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.

950 Customs seizures last year

Customs officers at the country’s four main ports made almost 950 seizures of contraband in 2008 including drugs valued at €32 million; 85 million cigarettes worth €33 million and 49,000 litres of alcohol valued at more than €250,000.

The combined value of items seized in 2008 was just over €70 million compared to €29 million in 2007.
