Body found in Wexford marshland
A BODY, matching the description of a man missing for over a month, was found in a marshland area in Co Wexford yesterday by a man walking by the water.
Gardaí were last night trying to establish if the body was that of a 20-year-old man from Wexford town who has not been seen since late on the night of December 17th. Yesterday at 4 pm an elderly man spotted a body floating in the water near Wexford wildfowl reserve.
Another man, 18-year-old Conal Owens from Dublin, went missing on New Year’s Eve. Investigations into his disappearance are continuing.
Working group on Dáil reform
The Government is to establish a working group on Dáil reform, to improve the efficiency and accountability of parliament.
Chief whip Pat Carey said it would “identify how best we can restructure the way we do our business in the Dáil. . . to ensure that the Irish people have a modern parliament which reflects their concerns and needs”.
Donegal award for Mulholland
Joe Mulholland, the former director of news at RTÉ and founder and director of the Patrick McGill summer school, is the 2008 Donegal Person of the Year, chosen by the Donegal Association. He will be inaugurated at a gala dinner in Dublin in March.
Dr Mulholland was born in Stranorlar, Co Donegal, and grew up in Ballybofey. He trained as a teacher in Manchester and studied at the University of Nancy in France and as an external student at the University of London. He joined RTÉ in 1970 and had a long and distinguished career in broadcasting and journalism.
Barracks closes in Letterkenny
The last Army base in North Donegal closed yesterday with a final march of B company of the 28th Infantry Battalion based at Rockhill barracks in Letterkenny. Hundreds of local people lined the streets to bid a final farewell to the 130 troops.
Jewish Museum director dies
Raphael Siev (73), curator of the Jewish Museum in Dublin’s Portobello, died yesterday morning in St James’s hospital following a brief illness.
