Man in court over assault in Waterford

A man has appeared at Waterford District Court charged with the assault of a Waterford man who died in hospital after suffering serious injuries at the weekend.

Martin Smith (29), Closegate, Waterford, is charged with assault causing harm of Michael Corbett (51), Barrack Street, Waterford, in the city last Saturday night.

Request for bail was refused by Judge Elizabeth McGrath, who remanded him in custody until June 17th.

Brothers deny 2006 murder

Two brothers have pleaded not guilty to murder in Dublin two years ago. Warren (34) and Jeffrey Dumbrell (28), Emmet Road, Inchicore, deny murdering Christopher Cawley at Tyrone Place, Inchicore, in October 2006.

The trial will start today before a jury in the Central Criminal Court sitting at Cloverhill.

Challenge to detention fails

The High Court has dismissed a challenge by convicted murderer James "Shay" Wildes to the lawfulness of his detention at Wheatfield Prison.

Wildes, Blessington Road, Tallaght, was jailed for life in 2003 after being found guilty of the murder of Joseph Cummins (48) in December 2001. Mr Justice John MacMenamin said the challenge was made did not meet the standard required for release to be ordered.

Women's prison policy criticised

A district judge has criticised the Dochas Institute, the women's prison at Mountjoy, for applying what he called a "revolving- door policy".

Hearing that a shoplifter had served just two months of a nine-month sentence for robbery, Judge James McDonnell said in Tallaght District Court that "the orders of the court are not being respected" by the prison.

Judge McDonnell had previously heard a case involving a young woman who had asked him to jail her for 14 days in the Dochas Institute instead of her having to do community service.

Man faces sentence for rape

A Westmeath man is to be sentenced in July for raping a woman in a pub car park last year. Marcus McGrath (25), Collinstown, Mullingar, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to rape and oral rape of the woman on November 9th, 2007.

Settlement over pedestrian death

The husband of an elderly woman who died after she was struck by a car while walking across a pedestrian crossing has secured €240,000 in settlement of his family's High Court action.

Thomas Daly (86), Tramore Road, Cork, had brought the family's case against Darren Naughton, Barrack Street, Cork, arising from the death of his wife, Elizabeth (76), two years ago.

10 years for selling heroin

A cocaine addict caught "red-handed" in June last year selling heroin worth €90,000 in an attempt to repay an alleged €20,000 debt to criminals has been jailed for 10 years by Judge Katherine Delahunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Brian Ormonde (26) of Synott Place, said he had built up the debt after he lost a haul of heroin he claimed he had been holding.
